I am a fan of the Amazon Prime show “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” I haven’t seen Season 5, but I have thoroughly enjoyed Rachel Brosnahan’s performance. Did you know she was Kate Spade’s niece? This show is produced and written by the same people who made “Gilmore Girls” (another one of my favorite shows). Amy Sherman-Palladino was and is a writer/producer on both shows, having the same witty, fast-talking dialog. Today, April 14th, Amazon will release the fifth and last season of the show. Because it has been quite popular, Amazon did something special: They took over one mile of 5th Avenue, letting fans walk through sets, see artifacts from the ‘50s and ‘60s, and dancers provided live entertainment. It was called “Marvelous Mile” and marked by a pink carpet up and down the avenue between 46th Street and 56th Street.
A friend from home, Stella, told me about this event, and she knew about it because her daughter works for the PR firm for this event. Even cooler? Her daughter rang the bell at the Stock Exchange. How exciting is that?
This is New York… there is always something going on. I only had three days, a lot to do, and Anna Marie was landing this morning, but you can bet your last dollar I made time for this. You just never know what you will see or experience next. The City doesn’t sleep and it doesn’t give me much time to sleep either.
Pierre joined me so we met on 46th Street and walked up to 56th Street.
Saks Fifth Avenue even displayed original dresses from the show in their windows, and performers danced to 1950s songs.
Every block had some kind of display or set that you might see on the show. I even acted like I was the stand-up comedian…for a brief second.
This was fun. REALLY fun!
I walked with Pierre from 56th Street to about 62nd Street; Pierre was on his way home to have lunch with Grant who would be leaving on a business trip. This was my last Friday so what better way to celebrate a beautiful day than to have a Nathan’s hot dog in Central Park?
As Barbra Streisand said in the movie Funny Girl, “Hello, Gorgeous!”
Anna Marie checked into The Sonder and then picked up her car which had been shipped from San Francisco, for our road trip. Fortunately, she could find parking on the same street as The Sonder. I kid you not, I was already worrying back in November about how having a car in Manhattan would work out. Not that I was anxious to leave by any means. It is just the way my Bidarray-brain works. Would she be able to find parking? Close by? How would we load the car?
Anna Marie rested, and by evening Pierre, Anna Marie, and I were happy to visit through a very nice, leisurely meal at Harry’s. The meal was delicious, the ambiance was impeccable, and the decor? I think you will be able to see for yourself. A nightcap finished off our night, and per usual, we were the last ones to leave Harry’s. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
Sleeping comfortably in bed that night, I heard the fire alarm in the room buzz around 3:00 a.m. Just in case I hadn’t heard it, Anna Marie phoned at the same time. I have heard this alarm at least five times in the past seven months. Always, a voice speaks over the intercom to let us know it is a false alarm; to stay in the room. Typically I can’t understand the voice because it is muffled or otherwise difficult to understand. I have complained in the past. Tonight, however, was different. Tonight, it was a full-blown alarm with evacuation orders. In fact, when Anna Marie called, she let me know she could smell smoke on her floor, that she was evacuating. I was on the 22nd floor, which meant 22 flights of stairs. When I got downstairs, I found Anna Marie outside, across the street, with the rest of the occupants. Fire trucks, firemen… Oh, yes! FULL BLOWN. Although Anna Marie was nervous, we did have a good laugh when I realized I had come down in my pajamas with my cell phone in one hand and the TV remote in the other. TV remote? Really? Little by little, we saw people meander their way back into the Hotel, and the firemen were leaving. As it turned out, the fire was actually on Anna Marie’s floor, but it was quickly put out. So back to bed, we went… cellphone and remote control in hand.
